Evidence-based
We only offer treatment approaches backed by scientific research and conclusively shown to be effective. Below you’ll find details about many of the therapies we use in sessions at MyLife.

Internationally-recognised evidence-based therapies we use:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is one of the most popular talking therapies for various mental health conditions. It’s well supported by science and can help you manage your condition by simultaneously focusing on your thoughts and behaviours.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

One of the core principles of ACT is to maximise your potential for a full and meaningful life by accepting what is out of your personal control and cultivating vitality through living mindfully and committing to actions consistent with your values.

  • Mindfulness

As an ancient (not religious) spiritual practice, mindfulness brings you back to the current moment. It helps you become more present, aware of your surroundings and engaged in what you’re doing. This can help reduce feelings of overwhelm and change how you respond to issues or challenges.

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT helps partners understand the current dynamic in their relationship. Couples are taught to recognise and avoid their distressing patterns, which creates more safety in the relationship. Fundamental to EFT is the role of deeper emotions in informing us about core needs and values.

  • Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy integrates techniques from numerous approaches to target dysfunctional beliefs and behaviour patterns developed early in life that repeat over time. Schema Therapy is effective for complex and entrenched psychological difficulties and explores current problems clients are experiencing, as well as the historical sources of these difficulties.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

A form of CBT, DBT is a powerful way to manage difficult and intense emotions. The central premise of DBT is that we can reduce our suffering if we modify our thoughts and actions. When we use DBT, we are working to accept our experience as a valid part of our story, while also taking steps to change our lives for the better.

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an integrative psychotherapeutic approach that enables people to heal from the emotional consequences resulting from psychological trauma and other adverse life experiences.

FAQs

Seeing a psychologist for the first time can feel daunting, so our first priority is making sure you feel comfortable. During your initial session, your psychologist will try to get a good understanding of your concerns and your goals for therapy. Your psychologist will provide feedback and recommendations for treatment approaches that are likely to be effective and the number of sessions you might need to see improvements. ‘Fit’ is important, so you’ll have the chance to ask questions and determine whether your psychologist is right for you.

You may feel ready to make another appointment at the end of the first consultation, or you can think about it. We want you to leave your first session feeling heard, respected and understood, with a good idea of what your therapy options are and a sense of confidence in your psychologist’s ability to help you make positive changes.

Our fees and rebates are consistent with current Medicare and Australian Psychological Society guidelines, and rebates are available for all our psychologists. You can get in touch with us to find out more about your specific situation and what you’ll need to claim a rebate.

Consultations with a psychologist last between 50-60 minutes.

We’re committed to providing effective, tailored therapy. There are no hard and fast rules about the length of treatment, so this will largely be determined by the nature of your concerns. You’ll chat about this with your psychologist at your first appointment and together you’ll decide on a plan you’re comfortable with. Clients typically attend between 5-15 sessions, with some requiring fewer sessions and others more if they’re experiencing more complex difficulties.
